Tring genealogy enthusiasts can now research their family

tree online, searching documents for information on ancestors from the last

thousand years.

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies has launched its online shop, with

genealogical material and documents dating back to 1060 available to buy.

The index - Hertfordshire Names Online - is available for free through Hertfordshire

County Council’s website at

www.hertsdirect.org/libsleisure/heritage1/HALS/indexes.

Keith Emsall, executive member for culture, said: “Researching family and local

history is increasingly popular thanks to the amount of records available

online. This service makes information from Hertfordshire easier to find and

simpler to get hold of than ever.”

Up to now, these records have only been accessible by making a personal visit

to Hertfordshire Archives at County Hall or requesting a quote for a copy.  The new online resource means that people who

have family links to the area but are now living anywhere in the world can

access the information and order copies of documents.

Anything from finding an ancestor’s marriage entry to a local newspaper article

from the 19th century is available, with electronic copies starting at £5.00.
